When we first arrived on our off grid property last year, we decided to keep things simple and just use the propane-powered refrigerator and freezer in our RV. Off grid appliances (built specifically for such an application) are likely expensive so while that is something we may very well consider in the future, this time around we put on our thinking caps to figure out how to get a normal appliance to work for us. Let me start out by saying that I’m sure there are off grid living appliances that are actually designed for off grid use, but that’s not what this post is about necessarily.

For us, we had to live without a large freezer for the first year of our off grid journey but we’re happy to report that we recently made an upgrade to something larger! Regardless, I only recommend the products I use personally and believe will add value to my readers.Living off the grid doesn’t mean you need to go without all of your favorite amenities, but it can require a little ingenuity to meet your needs and desires in a sustainable way.

I have a 46-gallon water tank, 15-gallon greywater tank, and a water pump. I can’t imagine having a tow around and dump a black water tank. I love my composting toilet whether I’m on-grid or off-grid. It still uses a little electricity to spark, but it’s very efficient. When I’m off-grid I switch my Dometic 2354 3-way refrigerator to run on propane. Propane RV refrigeratorĬall me fancy, but a regular cooler just isn’t enough for my lifestyle. This will power most of my Tiny House RV, as long as I have enough sunshine and I’m careful with my usage. I also love to use my BaseLantern as a camp light because it’s very bright, lasts a long time, and is compact.įor off-grid electricity, I use a portable 1250 watt solar system from Goal Zero with four panels.

That’s a handy tool when electricity is at a premium. With my compact BioLite camp stove, which burns small pieces of wood, I can charge my cell phone with the energy it produces. BioLite Camp Stove and lanternĬooking outside is my preferred method when I’m off-grid.

The Solavore Solar Oven uses zero electricity, and it even works during winter with the help of sun enhancing reflectors! All you need is sunshine and an appetite.
